This Week In RuneScape: Wintumber Yak Track & Advent Calendar

This Week In RuneScape: Wintumber Yak Track & Advent Calendar

The Queen of Snow has returned with a winter-themed Yak Track to keep you on your frostbitten toes! Take on her tasks for all sorts of enchanting prizes. Talking of treats, the annual Advent Calendar is back, with presents every day until Christmas! And if that's not enough, the Black Friday Sale is here! In short, it's gifts galore - and Santa's not even started loading his sleigh yet…

    Yak Track: Wintumber Aurora
    Harness the Northern Lights!

Ahh, that first hint of a chill in the air, the frost on your breath, the promise of snow crunching underfoot – there’s something magical about the arrival of winter, right? Puts us in the mood for frosty escapades. Well, if that’s how you’re feeling too, make sure you get on the latest Yak Track, hosted by the Queen of Snow herself!

The Queen (who has a new model, by the way) needs your help. Assist with her various tasks and you’ll bag a whole host of wintery treats, including sublime Northern Lights-themed cosmetics and pets, plus a maximum 20% XP boost. For those of you taking part in the Golden Party Hat Hunt, there’s also a shard on the free track – you’ll find it at Task 15!

We’re also debuting a brand new task called Secret Santa. As you can probably guess, it’s all about giving and receiving gifts, with lots of exciting goodies in store for sufficiently generous ‘Scapers! Most wonderful time of the year, innit.

Ready? Get your skates on then, because the Wintumber Aurora Yak Track ends January 9th. A Premier Pass costs two Bonds, or you can get it free with Premier Club – which is available now!

    Advent Calendar
    Daily delights throughout December

The RuneScape Advent Calendar is back! Open one door each day until Christmas and reveal the pressies within.

And every time you open a door on the same day as the number written on it, you’ll get a free Treasure Hunter Key, as well as progress towards the grand prize: the Horizon Sword!

There’s also a different Treasure Hunter promotion every day of the Advent Calendar, so it’s the perfect opportunity to catch up on any rare prizes you missed throughout the year.

    Golden Party Hat Hunt
    The search continues...

Don’t forget, the Golden Party Hat Hunt continues until January 3rd! One of the must-have hats of RuneScape legend could be all yours. All you’ve got to do is find eight shards hidden in tasks throughout the game.

Some of the shards come from drops, but not to worry – even the most mirror-smashing bad luck sponges among you are protected! As you continue to train a skill or complete clue scrolls, the likelihood of receiving a shard grows exponentially. Basically, anyone actively playing throughout this event should be able to get their hat.

Head this way (yeah? YEAH?) to find out how to get started and snag a real RuneScape icon!

    Patch Notes
Fixes and improvements in this week's game update

    Daily Challenges

    • Extending a Daily Challenge now costs 25 Vis Wax (down from 30).
    • When generating three Daily Challenges on a new day, if fewer than three challenges are toggled on, duplicates of unblocked challenges will be rolled.
      • i.e. If you've blocked all but Dungeoneering challenges, you'll roll three Dungeoneering challenges rather than having to complete a challenge and pay Vis Wax to re-roll the next challenge to the type you want.
    • You can now track all three of your Daily Challenge slots, even if they contain the same challenge objective.
    • Players now need a minimum level of 99 in a skill to access the Challenge Block feature from a Challenge Mistress.
    • Free-to-play 'Scapers can block Membership skills once they reach the level cap (for example, level 5 Agility).
    • The Agility Daily Challenge now counts each of the seven segments of the Anachronia Agility Course as its two laps, similar to Yak Track Agility tasks.
    • Basic challenges no longer give XP in their skill when you Claim Reward. This is so that skilling pures or specialist builds that only want to focus on one skill at a time can still access Daily Challenges.
    • All Combat Challenges can now be toggled off via a checkbox in the Skill Select interface, accessible via a Challenge Master. This can now be accessed at any level and turns off Combat, Prayer and Summoning Daily Challenges.
    • If the player currently has a basic challenge to do, Challenge Mistresses and Nastroth in Lumbridge now give a chat option to skip any of these challenges. This is so that a new player who does not want to engage in certain skills and/or get the XP from them does not have to complete all the basic challenge objectives.
    • The initial set of Daily Challenges assigned to a new player after completing the basic challenges is now Daily Mining, Daily Smithing and Daily Crafting (equipment), instead of Daily Combat, Daily Prayer and Daily Smithing. We think this is more skiller-friendly!
    • We've removed the 'Skip' text from Challenge Tokens, changed the Skip button text to 'Complete', and updated other bits of text to make it more clear that claiming the rewards from a completed challenge will give you XP in that challenge's skill.
    • Selecting each skill from the Challenge Blocking interface is much more responsive.

    Other

    • Text for the Main Menu has been changed to True Type font for sharpness and greater readability.
    • Greater Flurry will now deal increased single target damage when applied by the Greater Barge effect.
    • Fixed an issue that caused ranged abilities to not correctly put the players auto attack on cooldown.
    • Fixed an issue where completing the Hard mode task awarded the player the same amount of Reaper points as completing the task in Normal mode.
    • Fixed an issue that prevented the Granite Maul special attack from being used during global cooldown if stored inside an Essence of Finality.
    • Fixed an issue that caused Arch Glacor loot to be rerolled on a player's second kill of a killstreak in Hard mode.
    • Fixed an issue with a script error during the Elite Dungeon Taraket encounter.
    • Mummies killed by fire abilities now count towards the task in the Menaphos City Quest.
    • To prevent confusion, players using lootshare at Croesus will no longer be given a message about their Luck Ring having an effect, as there is a chance the item won't be distributed to them.
    • Some graphical issues with Closure's outfit override have been resolved.
    • In Once Upon A Time in Gielinor: Finale, a more appropriate shield animation is now used during Philipe's memory.
    • The player must now complete Once Upon A Time in Gielinor before they can wear the Completionist Cape.
    • As the perception of cosmetic overrides has evolved since the release of The Death of Chivalry. Plus, based on community feedback, the player is now considered to be disguised as Captain Dulcin as long as they're either wearing the Black Knight Captain Armour or have activated the Dulcin Armour override. This is even if they've overridden their appearance to not appear disguised.
    • Processing broken Chitin on an anvil now plays a sound effect.
    • Smithing partially folded Alloy Bars now plays a sound effect.
    • Smithing Gnome Platebodies during Doric's Task V now plays a sound effect.
    • The correct sound effects now play when using a Smithing animation override.

    Mobile

    • Based on feedback, mobile players now have the ability to change the direction messages appear in the chatbox to ascending or descending.
      • To choose, select the Common Chat Settings button at the bottom right of the chatbox and select the Chat Direction drop-down.
    • Fixed the issue when the character can't move after displaying a preview of the slomo walk animation in the Customisation Interface.
    • Fixed an issue on mobile where summoning a pet and closing the interface would block Inventories until you dismiss your pet.
    • Fixed an issue where the Beast Master Charge Counter was obscuring gameplay.

We've loved seeing you all enjoying our anniversary book with Dark Horse, which chronicles the first 20 years of RuneScape. But guess what? It's actually not the only history of RuneScape released this year! Check out this massive 1,000+ page digital tome from July - The RuneScape Historian.

The History of RuneScape: A Fan Made Trilogy goes right back to the very beginning (pre-2001), including the development of PvP, PvM, skilling, questing and more. It also includes a Hall of Fame, spotlighting the most influential players of all time!

While not an official RuneScape history, it has been published with Jagex’s permission, and £1 of the proceeds from every digital download are split across Jagex’s official charities.

This Week In RuneScape: Golden Party Hat Hunt & Once Upon A Time: Finale!

This Week In RuneScape: Golden Party Hat Hunt & Once Upon A Time: Finale!

Right, take a deep breath... there's so much new stuff landing today! The Golden Party Hat Hunt is on, Once Upon A Time In Gielinor reaches its climax, plus we've made tons of tweaks with the new Ninja Strike. We're also gearing up for Black Friday and the holiday season at the Merch Store. Let's get to it…

    Golden Party Hat Hunt
    The hunt is on!

We’re closing out our 20th anniversary year with a very special celebration: the chance for you to make a super-rare, dazzling, tradeable Golden Party Hat!

Starting today and running for the next six weeks, you’ll have various options throughout RuneScape for collecting shards. Once you've got eight of them, you’ll be ready to create the most sought-after headgear in all of Gielinor!

There are 11 shards available in total - check the Golden Party Hat Hunt Interface to see how you can get more (and track the ones you’ve already earned). Oh, and by the way, if you’ve joined Premier Club 2022 you already have a head start with a bonus shard from us to say thanks!

    Social_1080x1080px.jpg

Start by visiting the Wise Old Man at the Grand Exchange in Varrock. The Golden Party Hat Hunt runs for six weeks until January 3rd – so get going now to snatch a bit of RuneScape history!

    FAQ

Q: Is leveling a skill necessary to gain a shard?

A: Nope! You earn shards while training any skill, so just go about your regular activities!

Q: Can we obtain multiple shards from the same activity?

A: Each skill only rewards one shard, so you'll need to mix up your skilling activities to earn them.

Q: Do I need Membership to access the shards and make the Party Hat?

A: To secure your Golden Party Hat, you'll need to be a RuneScape Member and obtain eight of a possible 11 shards spread across the game.

Q: Are Ironman players able to participate?

A: Ironman players will be able to create their own hat - however, they will not be able to trade it.

Q: Some of the shards come from drops but I have terrible luck. What is the likelihood I won’t be able to finish it?

A: Slim! While there is an element of RNG to collecting the shards, they also have in-built 'bad luck' protection. As you continue to train a skill or complete clue scrolls, the likelihood of getting a shard grows exponentially. Essentially, it's our intent that players who are actively playing throughout this event will be able to create their own hat without too much worry

Q: Will Protean items drop the shards?

A: Yes, Protean items will be able to drop their relevant shards.

Q: Where can I buy the shard that's for sale?

A: Nic the Trader will sell you a shard! You can find him at the Grand Exchange.

Q: Does the clue shard come from completing a Clue Scroll or from the Casket?

A: The shard will come from completing a Clue Scroll.

Once Upon A Time In Gielinor: Finale
Our anniversary quest series reaches its conclusion

The concluding episode of our anniversary quest series is here! We’ve been following the story of Relomia over the course of 2021, and it’s been quite a ride – now it’s time to help her pick up the pieces and discover her true self in Once Upon A Time In Gielinor: Finale.

To play, you’ll first need to complete the first three instalments in the series: Foreshadowing, Flashback and Fortunes.

The final quest will be worth four juicy Quest Points. It’s a must-play for Quest Point Cape owners because it lets you access the penultimate reward from May’s Quest Caravan – including a T5 Magical Dice!

Finale also yields some stunning cosmetic rewards – oh, and one of those all-important Golden Party Hat shards!

Ready? Get started by talking to Closure in his office.

    Patch Notes
Fixes and improvements in this week's game update

    Ninja Strike 28

    • Pets & Familiars
        • Abyssal Minion
        • Baby Basilisk
        • Minitrice
        • Baby Kurask
          • The Thaler cost for any extra copies of the above pets will be refunded.
        • Improved the messaging when performing an erroneous action with a familiar's special attack.
        • Improved overall messaging surrounding the fight functionality on legendary pets who can fight.
        • The following object pets from the Soul Wars minigame have been converted to follower pets on the interface:
        • Pets that were recently converted from object pets to follower pets were missing SFX, text and animations that would trigger when the pet was active. This has now been fixed.
        • Fixed an issue where some familiar's special attacks weren't useable via the action bar.
        • Fixed an issue where players would get random ghost messages about legendary pet fights.
        • Changing a legendary pet’s abilities while it's summoned will no longer stop it from doing random actions, such as scavenging or emotes.

      Menaphos

        • Menaphos City Quests have new cooldown times based on your reputation tier.
          • By default, the cooldown is now 15-20 minutes,
          • At tier 2 it's between 10-15 minutes.
          • At tier 4 it's between 5-10 minutes.
          • At tier 6 it's between 0-5 minutes.
          • At tier 8 there is no longer a cooldown.
        • An infobox now appears informing the player when a new City Quest is available.
        • The City Quest Enhancer has been buffed so that it:
          • Doubles the base reputation gained.
          • Doubles progress for the Phite For Your Right set of Achievements.
          • Doubles the amount of rolls for the two Jewels from the Jewels of the Elid collection.
        • Adjusted the description of the Enhancer to reflect the above changes
        • There are additional checks for giving the player a Jewel depending on their inventory or Bank space.

    General QoL and Bugfixes

        • Fixed an issue where the 'Cleave' and 'Sweep' abilities were sharing the same cooldown. In order to combat this, the following has been implemented:
          • A debuff icon has been added to show that the ability is on cooldown.
          • Cleave remains on a 7.2 second cooldown.
          • Sweep now has its own 7 second cooldown.
          • As a result of this, using Sweep no longer puts Cleave on cooldown, and vice-versa.
        • The loot interface now has a settings button that will open the loot system settings interface.
        • Added Orikalkum Salvage to the array of items that can be processed by the Spring Cleaner.
        • The Money Pouch will now show the total amount of coins gained when receiving multiple stacks of gold within a single game tick, instead of only the most recent amount received. This will be notable in situations such as using Area Loot or collecting from Grand Exchange transactions.
          • The filterable messages in the chatbox will still display the individual amounts received separately.
        • The Gear Siphon interface can now be used while in combat. However, using the Siphon Counter to enter a custom amount will interrupt skilling, and will itself be interrupted by combat.
        • Ironmen accounts that unintentionally received Lucky Dip tickets from skilling activities in September have had these tickets removed.
        • The description text of the Invention Task Enhancer is now slightly more, err, descriptive.
        • Removed restocking time from the Skillcapes Shop in the Max Guild.
          • Removed the ‘buy all’ option for Shop items that have less than two in stock.
          • Added the stock number for any Skillcapes in the generic Shop interface.
        • The Berserker, Maniacal, and Reckless Auras have had their full effects added to their description within the Aura interface.
          • Added more information to the examine texts of these Auras.

    Balancing

    Magma Tempest

Magma tempest has seen a lot of feedback over the past few weeks, with concerns over its synergy, power, and usability all at the forefront. So, we've moved to make the ability easier to use, while toning down its raw power and removing its synergy with critical strikes.

Magma tempest when unlocked is now two versions of the same ability: Magma Tempest and Magma Tempest (Targeted). The targeted version will work as you've come to expect, allowing it to be fired at an NPC or tile. The other variant of Magma tempest is more akin to a standard ability, requiring no extra inputs and firing the tempest at your current target - while also working with revolution. Both versions of Magma Tempest share a cooldown and will appear as separate ability icons, allowing you to choose which you want to use on the fly!

Magma tempest as a multi-hitting ability synergises incredibly well with both stat boosts and critical strike modifiers, granting ridiculous levels of damage and adrenaline when paired with Tsunami and the Fractured Staff of Armadyl. Because of this we're removing its ability to critically strike, reducing the gap between critical-magic builds and other combat styles, and lowering its top-end damage to make up for the huge bonus it gains from stat boosts. We'll continue to monitor these rewards and make any adjustments where necessary.

      • Magma Tempest damage reduced from 5-25% per hit -> 5-19% per hit.
      • Magma Tempest can no longer critically strike.

    Breakdown

Comparative damage stats at 2153 ability damage, level 99 magic + Supreme Overload

    Before this update

      • Min hit:183
      • Max hit: 689
      • Avg: 436
      • Total Avg (8 hits): 3488

    After this update

      • Min hit:183
      • Max hit: 560
      • Avg: 372
      • Total Avg (8 hits): 2972

    Dragonbreath (comparative)

      • Min hit: 885
      • Max hit: 4199
      • Total Avg (1 hit): 2542

Additionally, it should be noted that Magma tempest will perform better under increased stat boosts (such as Elder Overloads and Maniacal Aura) compared to single hit abilities. This also still applies on-hit effects multiple times, such as Cinderbane gloves and God books. Single hit abilities with higher ability damage scaling will perform better with improved gear.

    Scripture of Jas

The Scripture of Jas is in an odd spot where it's more difficult to correctly use compared to the Scripture of Wen, while also capping how much of a benefit you can gain from it. As a result, we're raising the damage cap on the item in the hope that it may better fill a niche for players utilising a lot of damage over time effects that wouldn't be boosted by the Scripture of Ful.

      • - Increased the damage cap for Scripture of Jas: 10,000 -> 30,000

    Other

    • Increased drop rate of the Resonant anima of Bik from skilling nodes in the Senntisten:
      • Fishing and Hunter nodes now have a 50% chance to reward anima when successfully gathering resources.
      • Mining and Woodcutting nodes now reward guaranteed anima on successful resource gather.
    • The particles that appear on the core underneath Croesus are now Red, Blue and Yellow, in order to help with colourblindness. Colourblind mode can be toggled through right-clicking on Gorvek.
    • Fixed an issue that prevented Tempest of Armadyl from dealing additional hits to nearby targets when combined with Greater Chain.
    • Fixed an issue where flying Vyrewatch in Meiyerditch could bite whomever is attacking them instead of their intended target.
    • In response to player feedback, we have added the name of your current Slayer/Reaper monster to the Slayer counter tooltip to more easily determine the name of the target when the counter is in shrink mode.
    • In response to player feedback, we've reduced the size of cash bags in Daily Challenge reward chests (ie large->medium and medium→small).
    • In response to player feedback, cash bags are now substituted for oddments in the Daily Challenge reward chests if you're an Ironman.
    • Aura Refresh items that are gained from the daily challenge's weekly reward system are automatically added to your aura refresh interface.
    • Fixed a number of stretching issues with the Augmented Fractured Staff of Armadyl across dyed and un-dyed variants.
    • Corrected the Hard Falador achievement 'Mass Production's Crafting prerequisite to Runecrafting.
    • Fixed an issue where the weekly reward chests from the Daily Challenge update could be searched for on the Grand Exchange.
    • Fixed an issue which allowed the Marketplace and Bank to be opened at the same time.
    • Fixed an issue where the Oddments store would not stay open when opened from the Treasure Hunter tab. Now it remains open if it is opened from the Treasure Hunter tab.

New Bonus Weekly Rewards & Daily Challenge Upgrades
A new approach to Daily Challenges

Big news this week - we’ve improved the Daily Challenges experience, and have got some new Weekly Rewards for you too!

Currently, players are stuck with a selection of challenges that aren't necessarily appealing, and these can end up stagnating in your backlog. Some of the current tasks on offer are also a little imbalanced, and the rewards feel a little stale. So we thought it was time for a bit of an upgrade!

    Here’s what’s changing:

    • You’ll get three Daily Challenges every day. These then expire at the end of the day before being replaced by three more.
    • Completing a Daily Challenge awards a Large Lamp (previously a Huge Lamp) - but now you can get three rewards per day, not just one!
    • Vis Wax has more value than ever before. A re-roll of your Daily Challenges now only costs 10 Vis Wax (it was 25) and you can re-roll as many times as you want! Extending a Challenge now only costs 30 Vis Wax (it was 50) and doubles its Weekly progress (see below).
    • We’ve also improved specific Daily Challenges that we felt were a bit rusty – see the Patch Notes for full details.

    NEW Weekly Challenges

    • Completing a Daily Challenge progresses a brand new Weekly Reward Track - one for Free to Play players, and one for Members.
    • Every three Dailies you complete unlocks a Weekly Reward – with up to a maximum of seven unlocks per week!
    • Rewards could include anything from Silverhawk Down and Dungeoneering Tokens up to a Cash Bag, Deathtouched Dart or Gift For the Reaper! (Note: For Ironman players, restricted rewards are substituted with Oddments)
    • Feeling a wee bit lazy? Ah, we all have our off-days. Luckily, the Weekly Track contains Challenge Skip Tokens – meaning you can swerve the objective and claim the lovely rewards. Go on, treat yourself!
    • RuneScape Members receive the rewards from both the Member and free-to-play tracks, while non-members only get the free-to-play goodies.

We think these changes should really enhance the Daily Challenge experience. Let us know what you think!

    Coming Up In RuneScape
Golden Party Hats, the final Once Upon A Time miniquest and more!

Phew, 20 years of RuneScape, eh? What a year it’s been! But it’s not over yet – we’re rounding out 2021 with some seriously big moments, including the chance to earn a very special item!

In case you missed Friday’s announcement, here’s what we mean…

    Golden Party Hat Hunt!

What better way to conclude our 20th year than with a super-rare, time limited and task-orientated opportunity to earn a Golden Party Hat?

Party Hats are some of the most sought-after items in RuneScape, and we don’t release them for any old reason. They’re tradeable, high value and of course, extremely fetching. They’ve only been available six times throughout RuneScape's entire history, so we’re not messing around when we say that you don’t want to miss the 2021 Golden Party Hat Hunt!

To earn your Golden Party Hat, you’ll have to complete a variety of tasks in order to land some shards. Fortunately, there are lots of different tasks available, so you can approach things in your own inimitable style. Time is of the essence, however - the grand shard search begins November 22nd and runs until January 3rd. Mark your calendars, folks – we’d hat for you to miss out...

Check out the full details in our special blog.

    Once Upon A Time Quest

Our anniversary quest series concludes at the end of this month, with the final chapter of Relomia’s story. It’s time to help her discover her true self, as she learns how she can make a difference to the world of Gielinor. The fourth and final instalment will be worth 4 Quest Points, which is enough to access the penultimate Reward Track unlock – and a T5 Magical Dice!

Make sure you’ve caught up with the first three miniquests (Foreshadowing, Flashback and Fortunes) before the final adventure launches on November 22nd.

    Full details here.

    Death Costs Discussion

This December we’ll be hosting an open discussion with the community on Death Costs, the outcome of which will shape any future designs. More news soon!

    Golden Party Hat Hunt

    Golden Party Hat Hunt

RuneScape's a world of danger and mildly enjoyable peril, so you might think that the most cherished items are super powerful weapons or armour? Wrong! As most RuneScape players know, there's one item to rule them all in Gielinor - the mighty Party Hat.

Only six party hats have been released over RuneScape's illustrious 20 year history, but as part of our ongoing double-decade celebration we're adding a seventh. After all, what better way to celebrate 20 years than to pay homage to our 2001 Christmas event? Say hello to the Golden Party Hat!

    Golden Party Hat Hunt 16_9-Text.jpg

Whether you're completing your Party Hat collection or simply investing in what's bound to be a highly valuable item in the future (yes, it's tradeable!), the Golden party Hat is Gielinor's new must-have fashion accessory. You don't want to miss this one-time opportunity which you can start working on soon! The Golden Party Hat Hunt commences on November 22nd and will come to an end on January 3rd. Note that only one Golden Party Hat can be made per account.

But here and now, the good news is that there are several ways for you to get one on your noggin!

    Collecting Shards

To secure your Golden party Hat you'll need to both be a RuneScape member and obtain 8 of a possible 11 shards spread across the game. Here's where you can find them throughout the Anniversary event:

    • (1/11) Talk to the Wise Old Man who is waiting for you outside the Grand Exchange in Varrock. Easy peasy!
    • (2/11) Complete the 'Once Upon a Time in Gielinor' Anniversary quest - you can read more about that here!
    • (3/11) Every time you earn a Mark of War, there is a chance to earn a shard.
    • (4/11) Shards are also a possible drop from completing Clue Scrolls.
    • (5/11) One shard can be had when training Combat skills (Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, Prayer, Magic, Constitution, Summoning).
    • (6/11) One shard can be had when training Gathering skills (Mining, Fishing, Woodcutting, Farming, Hunter, Divination, Archaeology).
    • (7/11) One shard can be had when training Artisan skills (Herblore, Crafting, Fletching, Smithing, Cooking, Firemaking, Runecrafting, Construction).
    • (8/11) One shard can be had when training Support skills (Agility, Thieving, Slayer, Dungeoneering).
    • (9/11) Another shard can be obtained at Level 15 of the free track in the Christmas Yak Track event.
    • (10/11) One shard can be purchased with 30 million in-game gold.
    • (11/11) One shard is given with Premier Club 2022 membership purchase.

Once you've got eight shards in your inventory, simply go back to the Wise Old Man at the Grand Exchange where he will magically transform them into the coveted Golden Party Hat! Note that additional shards cannot be traded and have no other use.

    Social_1080x1080px.jpg

    Time is of the Essence

The opportunity to find shards won't last forever - they'll only be available in-game between November 22nd and January 3rd. However, you'll have a grace period of two weeks after the end of the event (until January 17th) to trade in your shards for the Golden Party Hat, at which time your shards will turn into dust and your chance will be lost forever! We assure you that you'll be unimaginably sad if you miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity!

    Party On, Dudes!

That's everything! Celebrate 20 years of our favourite game with a lovely Golden Party Hat. Make sure you're ready to get started the minute the shards arrive - they're going to be the must-have item at any social gathering for quite some time.

    RuneScape: The First 20 Years

    RuneScape: The First 20 Years

OUT NOW IN ALL GOOD BOOK STORES!

We’ve partnered with Dark Horse Comics to bring you RuneScape: The First 20 Years, a lavishly illustrated, full-colour, hardcover book filled with insider info about the best game in the world – this one!

Dark Horse recruited Alex Calvin, the founder of PCGamesInsider, to interview all your favourite J-Mods, past and present. They also pored over 20 years’ worth of illustrations, concept art and various other bits and bobs to create an illustrated history of the development of the games over the past 20 years, covering both RuneScape and its precocious younger sibling, Old School RuneScape.

The main edition comes with a swanky red cover and is now available in all good bookstores. To snag a copy, visit comic book stores in the US, Amazon (US, UK, CA), Barnes and Noble (US), McnallyRobinson.com (Canada), or your friendly local bookstore! You can also buy it in Australia via this link or in New Zealand via this one.

For our most dedicated fans, the Deluxe Edition went on pre-order back in March exclusively on the RuneScape merch store. It features a black cover with foil treatments - very fancy - and comes with gilded page edges, a card slipcase, a ribbon bookmark and a hard-backed folio containing two archive-quality art prints. The content on the 224 full colour pages inside is the same as in the main edition.

The first folio print is an iconic Tim and Crunchy illustration. The second, which has just been revealed, is a battle scene from the archives featuring General Graardor. Created in 2012 for a series of unused loading screens depicting the God Wars, the note on the illustration reads “The Lesser Gods opened gates between Gielinor and other neighbouring realms and brought into it new races to fight their battles”.

    Duel Arena Changes
Preventing Real World Trading in RuneScape

Last month we announced additional action to prevent Real World Trading (RWT) in RuneScape. Of all the player bans dished out for RWT, the Duel Arena is the source of a whopping 38% of them.

As of today, no more than 50m in value can be staked per fight at the Duel Arena. This is a short term change, but we have long term plans to replace the Arena altogether. These are well underway and on track for early 2022!

Check out our recent post about RWT to see how we’re tackling this issue.

Elder God Wars has released a whole bunch of chase items, however, we're seeing prices sky-high as demand increases, but low drop rates are failing to meet this demand, resulting in an unpleasurable experience for both buyers and boss killers.

Drop rates for the following items from the Elder God Wars dungeon have been dramatically increased:

    • Magma Tempest Codex: drop rate has been increased by 100% in both normal and hard mode
    • Scripture of Ful: drop rate has been increased by 100% in both normal and hard mode
    • Pieces of the Fractured Staff of Armadyl: drop rate has been increased by 66%
    • Pieces of the Ek-ZekKil sword: drop rate has been increased by 66%

Elder God Wars Dungeon: The TzekHaar Front

Elder God Wars Dungeon: The TzekHaar Front

The fourth and final front of the Elder God Wars Dungeon is upon us, and it’s a real firestarter. Welcome to The TzekHaar Front, where you’ll prove yourself a true champion of Gielinor by fighting wave after wave of Ful’s most fearsome minions – culminating in a battle against the toughest of them all, TzKal-Zuk.

TzKal-Zuk was once a human warrior who earned his chops in the Senntisten colosseum. After he gained his freedom he set off in search of even tougher fights – and eventually found himself slicing through the TokHaar’s Fight Kiln. He claimed the Kiln as his prize, and as the centuries have passed by this already formidable fighter has transformed into Ful’s champion, a hulking terror at the heart of Senntisten. Oh, and he’s brought friends.

Ful wants TzKal-Zuk and his TzekHaar army to seize the Elder God Eggs and end this once and for all, but there must still be a shred of humanity in him, because he’s given you the opportunity to go mano a mano and settle things the good old-fashioned way – with a no-holds-barred epic battle between Gielinor’s two greatest warriors.

Are you prepared? If not, don’t panic – we’ve got all the info you need to take on The TzekHaar Front, plus the inside scoop on a few of the rewards. Let’s get fired up!

    Ful_Slayer.png

    Ful’s Champions

Before you can take on Ful’s ultimate champion, you’ll need to battle your way through waves of familiar beasties. Among them are upgraded, TzekHaar versions of TzTok-Jad and Har-aken, who’ll you know from your previous exploits in the Fight Caves and the Fight Kilns.

    Boss12.gif

After you’ve fought your way through the minion waves, you’ll finally get to take on Zuk himself.

    Champion_Zuk.png

    Checkpoints

You don’t have to take on The TzekHaar Front in one go. There are set checkpoints throughout the encounter that will let you continue from where you left off should you meet a sudden, fiery end.

However, if you're able to reach the end without checkpoints, you'll get better loot after the battle, including the valuable Igneous Stone, which you'll need for the new capes.

There’s another reason you might want to avoid using those checkpoints – unlocking Hard Mode.

    Hard Mode

By default, you’ll play through The TzekHaar Front on Normal Mode. Should you complete that flawlessly – without using checkpoints and completing all of Zuk’s challenges – you’ll unlock Hard Mode, a more difficult version of the Front with some unique loot.

You’ll notice the following changes in Hard Mode:

    • Enemies have increased HP.
    • There’s just one checkpoint, right before fighting Zuk.
    • Increased loot, including the chance to receive a piece of Zuk’s sword at the end of the encounter.
    • And more!

Now, should you flawlessly defeat Hard Mode as well, you’ll get the greatest reward of all – the ability to combine your three Igneous Capes (yes, obviously there’s capes) into one, totally epic variant.

Onto the best bit – the rewards!

    Rewards

Unlike the Fight Caves and the Fight Kiln, all the minions on The TzekHaar Front will drop loot, Elite Dungeon-style, into a chest that you’ll be able to access when the fight is over.

Alongside the usual loot table, there are some exclusive rewards available:

    Little Zuk

    Pet.jpg

Ain’t he adorable? Now you can take home your very own immortal warrior, who we presume was left in the Kiln a little bit too long. Complete 200 Hard Mode kills, and you’ll get a fancy new skin for him, too.

    Magma Tempest Ability Codex

The mages among you will appreciate this all-new two-handed magic basic ability. Point and click a tile – or an unfortunate NPC – to create a 5x5 damage-dealing area on that location. The AoE will last for 9.6 seconds and hit 8 times for 5-25% damage… each. Oof, what a burn!

    Scripture of Ful

Like the other Elder God Books, activating a fully compiled Scripture of Ful will get you a fiery buff. In this case, you’ll do 20% more damage and take 10% more damage for 15 seconds after activating the Scripture. Hey, you play with fire, you’re bound to get burned.

You’ll be able to charge your Scripture with Manuscripts of Ful, which are also dropped on The TzekHaar Front.

    Igneous Stone

This powerful stone is only given to the bravest of warriors. To earn one for yourself, you’ll need to prove yourself by defeating Zuk without using a single checkpoint.

You can use the Igneous Stone to upgrade your existing Kiln Cape to the new, supremely powerful Igneous variants. Let’s take a look at those, next.

    Igneous Capes

    Rewards2.jpg

This time, you can pick up a total of three different capes, each of which is best-in-slot for their particular combat style. Hey, it’s a tough challenge, and it deserves epic rewards!

The Igneous Kal-Ket is the cape of choice for melee masters, and gives +57 armour, +43 Strength bonus, and +2 Prayer bonus. It also boosts Overpower, so that it costs 60% of the usual adrenaline and hits twice.

The Igneous Kal-Xil, on the other hand, is best suited to Ranged combat. It boasts +57 armour, +43 Ranged bonus, and +2 Prayer bonus and empowers Deadshot, reducing its adrenaline cost to 60% and causing it to deal 42-210% of initial damage plus 70% ability damage every 1.2 seconds over the next 8.4 seconds. Basically, it absolutely destroys things.

Lastly, the Igneous Kal-Mej is the mage’s best friend. It gives +57 armour, +43 Magic bonus, and +2 Prayer bonus. It also buffs Omnipower, reducing its cost to 60% and causing it to hit four times, with each hit dealing 80-180% of ability damage. Kaboom!

    Igneous Kal-Zuk

You know what’s better than three awesome capes? ONE awesome cape!

    Capes.PNG

If you have the skill to complete a flawless Hard Mode run, you’ll be able to combine all three of the above capes into one unbeatable hybrid. It boasts +57 armour, +43 Magic, Strength, and Ranged bonus, and +2 Prayer bonus. Oh, and obviously it bestows the same buffs and boosts as the other three capes – without the hassle of re-equipping them every time you switch combat styles.

    cape.gif

    Ek-ZekKil

That’s a pretty nice sword Zuk’s got there, isn’t it? Would be an awful shame if some adventurer or other was able to repeatedly beat Hard Mode, pick up all three parts of it, and make their own… wouldn’t it?

    sword.gif

The three parts you’ll need are the Obsidian Blade, the Magma Core, and the Ancient Hilt, all of which can be obtained after defeating TzKal-Zuk in Hard Mode.

The sword itself is a tier 95 two-handed melee weapon which requires 95 Strength to wield. It also comes with its own signature special attack, the Igneous Cleave. It deals 62-190% initial ability damage, plus 6 hits of 30-105% ability damage (increasing by 5% for each hit) over the next 14.4 seconds. Yowch!

    Dyes.png

Just to add injury to insult, should your target be hit by a burn or bleed ability while Igneous Cleave is going, that effect will be extended by an extra hit, up to a maximum of five hits.

Oh, and just so you’re aware – Ek-ZekKil counts as an obsidian weapon for the purposes of the Berserker Necklace.

    Pontifex Ring Upgrade

This final front will also let you pick up the final upgrade for the Pontifex Ring. Once fully upgraded, you’ll be able to overpower it, getting you access to all the buffs it provides without having it equipped.

    Pernix’s Quiver

If you have the top tier Pontifex Ring, you’ll start to find Quiver Fragments in tier 3 Elder Troves. With 100 Fragments, you’ll be able to create the legendary Pernix’s Quiver, a Ranged accessory which goes in the quiver/ammo slot and comes with a slew of useful Ranged buffs.

Firstly, the Quiver grants access to two ammo slots, and automatically swaps your ammo to suit the type of Ranged weapon you’re using.

It also gives your ranged attacks +4% max damage when fighting targets below 25% health.

As a note, Pernix’s Quiver is tradable when first crafted, but untradeable once bound to you.

So, there you have it: your comprehensive guide to The TzekHaar Front, which will go live on October 25th.

This Week In RuneScape: Halloween 2021

Things are getting ghoulish in Gielinor this week with the start of our hair-raising Halloween event! Keep reading to learn more about that - plus, find out how you can get a first look at the fourth front of the Elder God Wars Dungeon!

    Halloween 2021
    There's a bad moon rising...

Awooo! It's Halloween in Gielinor, and, as per usual, there's some spooky goings-on at Draynor Manor. A small group of werewolves from across the Salve have temporarily settled in the Manor grounds - causing quite a stir with their new neighbours!

They don't mean any harm, though. In fact, they've set up a range of Halloween-y activities, with frighteningly fun rewards on offer for those brave enough to try them.

    Activities

This year we're building on the event format introduced in 2020, and bringing back three activities from last year's event:

    • Death's Dogwalker
    • Fragmented Souls
    • Plague Soup

Each activity has an associated miniquest. If you already played the required miniquest last year, there's no need to play it again - the activity you're after will be auto-unlocked.

We're also introducing two new activities:

    Shooting Gallery

Ed the werewolf is having trouble with some crafty crassians, and he needs your help to man the cannons and send them scuttling back to Davy Jones' locker! You'll put your Hunter and Fishing skills to the test in this fast-paced fish-fest.

This activity replaces Potato Gathering from the 2020 event.

    Skeleton Invasion

It seems the werewolves' presence has disturbed the residents of Draynor - including the ones who were already dead! In this minigame you'll fight off waves of skeletons with the help of Greg and the (living) Draynor villagers. Flex your Magic and Slayer skills and you'll be well on your way to shattering some skulls!

Free-to-play players should bear in mind that although they'll be able to access all the activities, they may not be able to use the skills required.

    Spooky Hour

If you've completed all the Halloween miniquests then you'll get 12% more XP during Spooky Hour, which occurs every three hours. Don't miss it!

    Rewards

If you participated in last years event - by which we mean, you completed one or more of the event miniquests - you'll be able to grab a Silver Death's Scythe for free from the event store. If not, don't panic - you can earn Spooky Tokens from all the activities on offer, and then exchange them for a variety of cursed cosmetics in Death's Spooky Store. You'll be able to get your hands on all of last year's rewards, plus two new ones! We've also brought back a few legacy cosmetics.

Or, if you like a little bit of mystery in your life, you can exchange your Tokens for Mystery Boxes. What's inside? We don't know! That's why it's a mystery!

If you've spoken to Death at least once, then you can get a daily reward for every day of the event.

Lastly, there's a new music track to unlock, so you can Monster Mash in style.

Ironman players should be aware that while they are able to participate in the event and purchase Mystery Boxes, they will receive different items to regular players.

The event ends on November 1st, so trot on down to Draynor Manor and speak to Luna to get started... if you dare!

    Double XP LIVE Returns Soon!
    Get those gains!

Double XP LIVE will return from midday November 5th to midday November 15th! That's a date to remember, for sure.

As a quick reminder, Double XP LIVE is a 10-day event during which you'll have 48 hours of Double XP time to spend on whatever skills you wish - and if you need a break, you can use the pause timer to kick back and relax in-game.

Both free-to-play players and members will have access to the event and can claim the daily rewards, but non-members will only receive 20% extra XP. Ironman players do not benefit at all.

So, get that in your calendar, and start planning! Which skill will you train first?

    Game Integrity: Real World Trading

    Hello 'Scapers,

Work to improve the integrity of our beloved game never stops. We want you to have fun and play competitively in an environment that's fair, and governed by mutual respect among players. As part of these efforts, additional measures to counter real world trading (RWT) will be introduced in the coming months.

    Gold RWT

Gold purchased through RWT is a problem in any online game featuring a tradeable currency. For the last 20 years, our Anti-Cheating Team has done much to tackle RWT sellers both in and out of the game. However, it's not just the sellers that have an impact on game integrity. Buyers fuel demand - and higher demand means more sellers, more bots to remove and more nefarious activity.

Thanks to a growing team and improved tools, we're now in a position where as well as tackling sellers, we can also begin to clamp down on buyers. In the next few hours we'll be sending out messages to players we've identified as engaging in RWT.

For anyone who has been involved, we want to be clear – this is your one and only warning.

Should any further RWT activity be detected, accounts face possible bans and wealth removal.

    Duel Arena RWT

The Duel Arena has been a flashpoint for this toxic behaviour. In fact, 38% of all RWT bans – accounting for thousands of bans per month – stem from there. We’ve heard your feedback and want to make definitive changes that keep the game fun for everyone.

We’re looking in the long-term to phase the Duel Arena out of RuneScape entirely. But before that, we'll be introducing some short-term measures to tide us over until our development teams can deliver a major update that fully replaces the Duel Arena next year.

The first step will be the implementation of a staking cap this November. This will limit stake values to no more than 50m GP per duel.

Our long-term solution, scheduled for early 2022, will replace the Duel Arena with a brand new experience that'll be part of the ongoing Elder God Wars storyline. We'll share more information on this when we can.

To the vast majority of you who are playing the game as intended, put simply - thank you for being you. We won't stop looking for more ways to maintain the integrity of the game you love.

    RuneScape: The First 20 Years

    RuneScape: The First 20 Years

Check out below for a sneak peek at some of the 224 full colour pages in the book.

The main edition comes with a swanky red cover and will be available in all good bookstores in the US on November 9th and worldwide on November 11th. To snag a copy on release, pre-order now through Amazon (US, UK, CA), Barnes and Noble (US), McnallyRobinson.com (Canada), or your friendly local bookstore! You can also pre-order in Australia via this link or in New Zealand via this one.

US based 'Scapers will be able to get their hands on a copy from their local comic book stores slightly earlier, from October 20th.

Or, for our most dedicated fans, we have the Deluxe Edition, featuring a black cover with foil treatments - very fancy! The final design is revealed below and comes with gilded page edges, a card slipcase, a ribbon bookmark and a hard-backed folio containing two archive-quality art prints.

    explodedview2.png

The first folio print is an iconic Tim and Crunchy illustration. The second, which has just been revealed, is a battle scene from the archives featuring General Graardor. Created in 2012 for a series of unused loading screens depicting the God Wars, the note on the illustration reads “The Lesser Gods opened gates between Gielinor and other neighbouring realms and brought into it new races to fight their battles”.

Both editions are currently sold out on the Official Merch Store. Pre-orders already placed on the store for both the Deluxe and Main Retail Edition should start leaving UK and US warehouses on October 19th.

Keep an eye out for more details – including stock updates and more sample pages - over the coming weeks!

Note: Release dates have moved from mid October due to ongoing global shipping issues, which have caused delays with key shipments for Dark Horse over the past few weeks.
